Zantel 3G data on Ubuntu 10.04
My Zantel 3G USB modem was surprisingly easy to set up on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), at least with some help from google.
The modem, a HUAWEI model EC168C, appears initially as a storage device on linux, with id 12d1:1446. This mode is used in order to install drivers on Windows (using autorun.exe), and probably also Mac OSX. The modem must be told to switch to modem mode. The tool usb-modeswitch can do this
aptitude install usb-modeswitch
This installs (from dependency package usb-modeswitch-data) the necessary udev rules in
/lib/udev/40-usb_modeswitch.rules
I did in addition (but I don’t know if it necessary) update the configuration file to include the resulting product ID after the mode switch: 1412.
TargetProductList="1001,1406,140c,1412,14ac"
Network-manager detects the new modem (probably) when the serial device /dev/ttyUSB0 appears. I configured the following:
Number: #777, username: @zantel.com, and a password with one single space. (The last is necessary in order to avoid the password prompt).
BTW, at TSH 10000 / USD 6,5 a week for 2GB, this is a good offer.
This information is useless and very incomplete
I’m sorry it doesn’t work for you (I just wrote exactly what I did to make it work…)
it doesnt work your information is actuary incomplete dude
OK, if you give me some more information, perhaps I can help.
What is the output of the console command
dmesg
after inserting the modem?
Asmund, Thanks alot man.. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and have been struggling a lot with the Zantel modem, I didn’t do any of those codings but the “single space” on password did all THA MAGIIIC!! j.t.u.k Its way more faster than it ever was in Windows.. 60,000 pounds of thanx.. lmfao
before I forget, have you find out the way to know the amount of data used and remaining in tha bundle??
From your mobile phone: Dial *755#, select 1, enter phone number of the Zantel modem, and wait for the text message.
Or just dial *755*1*phonenumber of modem#
I didn’t like the response from dude the information given was complete but i guess dude didn’t follow instruction properly;do the following after installation of usb-modeswitch navigate to /etc folder check if the usb-modeswitch is available, then use any editor you know to edit /etc/usb-modeswitch.d/12d:1446 add 1412 to the targetproductlist in the file /etc/usb-modeswitch.d/12d1:1446 hope this will help
thanks Asmund
